No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies for expedited underwriting, the process involved, and what happens if the fast track isn't available.

Many insurers now offer expedited underwriting: within specified age ranges and coverage amounts, decisions come from your application responses, pharmacy records, driving history and other information rather than a physical exam. In some cases decisions arrive within a single day. Each rate quote indicates whether the carrier requires an exam, might require one, or won't require one for that specific product.

What it changes

Bypassing the exam doesn't eliminate underwriting. The carrier verifies your answers, and a policy granted based on untrue information can be challenged during the first two years. If information in the carrier's records raises concerns, they might request an exam or tests; you'll have the choice to continue or withdraw.

Who tends to qualify

Usually people younger than about sixty seeking coverage up to the carrier's accelerated threshold, without significant health concerns and no tobacco use in the past 12 months or longer. Some carriers will use results from a recent medical visit with bloodwork rather than requiring a new exam.

Should an exam be needed, expect a 20 to 30-minute appointment conducted at your location in the Merced area by a paramedical professional, at no cost. For healthy applicants, an exam can actually improve your classification, making it not necessarily a negative.
